Course Overview

This course will provide an overview of why effective engagement of stakeholders is important for the success of urban infrastructure projects. All typical steps of stakeholder engagement will be explained in detail with a concrete case study (cable car project in the imaginary city of Greenville, a project with different stakeholders and their concerns).

About This Course

Are you managing your multiple stakeholders systematically? Hopefully yes. If not adequately involved, stakeholders can withdraw their support or even endanger the success of your urban infrastructure project. As a matter of fact, stakeholders have the power to impede or promote an infrastructure project. This course focuses on external stakeholder groups that are key to the development and operation of an urban infrastructure project. Stakeholders generally include affected communities, local government authorities, clients, shareholders, non-governmental organisations, vulnerable people and other interested, involved or affected parties.

Project developers and city administrations can demonstrate their responsible engagement through proper stakeholder engagement and assure that neighbouring communities “grant the social license to operate”.

While stakeholders need to be involved in many subjects or issues, the present course focuses on environmental and social issues. It is based on international good practices as defined in the IFC Performance Standards.

Target Group

This course aims to equip city officials with the knowledge to understand and manage E&S risks in compliance with internationally recognised standards which would not only enhance the project's positive impacts but also increase the likelihood of securing financing from international finance institutions.
